✧ ʿUmar ؓ gave us a sermon and said: 'O people, we used to recognize you when the Messenger of God ﷺ was among us...' and he mentioned the ḥadīth. In it: 'I do not send my governors to strike your skins.' He mentioned it. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ ؓ leapt up and said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, consider: if a Muslim man were in charge of a flock and disciplined some of his flock, would you exact retaliation from him?' He said: 'Yes, by the One in whose hand is ʿUmar's soul. How could I not exact retaliation from him, when I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ exact retaliation from himself? Indeed, do not strike the Muslims and humiliate them; do not withhold their rights and lead them to disbelief; do not confine them and tempt them; and do not send them into the thickets and cause them to perish.'
