✧ I was with Umar ؓ, and while we were sitting with him, a woman came and sat near him. She said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, my husband's evil has increased and his good has decreased.' He said to her: 'Who is your husband?' She said: 'Abu Salamah.' He said: 'That is a man who has companionship [with the Prophet], and he is indeed a truthful man.' Then Umar ؓ said to a man sitting with him: 'Is it not so?' The man said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, we know him only as you have said.' He said to another man: 'Stand and summon him for me.' The woman stood when he sent for her husband and sat behind Umar ؓ. It was not long before the two came together until he sat before Umar ؓ. Umar ؓ said: 'What does this woman sitting behind me say?' He said: 'Who is this, O Commander of the Faithful?' He said: 'This is your wife.' He said: 'And what does she say?' He said: 'She claims that your good has decreased and your evil has increased.' He said: 'Evil is what she said, O Commander of the Faithful! She is among the righteous of her women, the most clothed of them and the most comfortable in household, but her stallion is unproductive.' Umar ؓ said to the woman: 'What do you say?' She said: 'He has spoken the truth.' Umar ؓ stood with a whip and struck her with it, then said: 'O enemy of herself, you consumed his wealth and exhausted his youth, then you began to report what is not in him?' She said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, do not hasten; by Allah, I shall never sit in this gathering again!' He ordered for her three garments and said: 'Take this for what I did to you, and beware of complaining about this old man.' He said: 'It is as if I see her standing with the garments. Then he ؓ turned to her husband and said: 'Let not what you saw me do to her cause you to mistreat her.' He said: 'I would never do that.' He said: 'Go away, both of you.'
