“I said to Abu Sa’eed: ‘Did you hear anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning the lower wrap?’ He said: ‘Yes. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘The lower wrap of the believer should come to mid-calf, but there is no sin on him if it comes between that point and the ankle. But whatever is lower than the ankle is in the Fire.’ And he said three times: ‘Allah will not look at the one who lets his lower wrap drag out of vanity.’”

machine translationIt is narrated by al-ʿAlāʾ b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from his father, from Abū Saʿīd. It was transmitted from him by ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar, Ibn Jurayj, Ibn ʿUyaynah, Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, Warqāʾ, Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb, Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān, Mālik b. Anas and others. There is disagreement about Shuʿbah: Abū Zayd al-Harawī narrated it from Shuʿbah, from al-ʿAlāʾ, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, while others narrate it from Shuʿbah, from al-ʿAlāʾ, from his father, from Abū Saʿīd, and this is the correct one. Ismāʿīl al-Ṣaffār and Ḥamzah b. Muḥammad informed us, both saying: Ismāʿīl b. Isḥāq narrated to us: ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī narrated to us: Sufyān narrated to us: al-ʿAlāʾ b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yaʿqūb al-Juhanī narrated to us, from his father, who said: I asked Abū Saʿīd, I said: Tell me, did you hear anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the waist-wrapper (izār)? And ʿAlī mentioned the hadith. ʿAlī said: Sufyān said: Do you see what Zāʾidah says, that there is nothing like this chain of transmission in this matter? Sufyān said: I say there is nothing about the izār like this.

machine translationIt is narrated by al-ʿAlāʾ b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from his father, and there is disagreement about him. Fulayḥ b. Sulaymān narrated it from al-ʿAlāʾ, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, and Saʿīd b. ʿĀmir followed him, from Shuʿbah, from al-ʿAlāʾ, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah. The companions of Shuʿbah, Ghundar and Muʿādh, contradicted him; they narrated it from Shuʿbah, from al-ʿAlāʾ, from his father, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī. Likewise ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar, Ibn Jurayj, Ibn ʿUyaynah, Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, Warqāʾ and Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb narrated it from al-ʿAlāʾ, from his father, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī. Likewise ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar, Ibn Jurayj and Ibn ʿUyaynah narrated it, and this is the correct one. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAlqamah narrated it from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yaʿqūb, the father of al-ʿAlāʾ, from Abū Hurayrah. Likewise Yaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr narrated it from Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥārith, from Ibn Yaʿqūb, who is ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yaʿqūb, the father of al-ʿAlāʾ, from Abū Hurayrah. There is disagreement about Yaḥyā: Hishām al-Dastuwāʾī and Shaybān narrated it from him with this chain. Al-Awzāʿī narrated it in another copy from Yaḥyā, from Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm, from Abū Hurayrah, as a mursal report. Ayyūb b. Khālid and ʿAlī b. Rabīʿah said, from al-Awzāʿī, from Yaḥyā, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, but they both erred in it. The sound (ṣaḥīḥ) version from Yaḥyā is: from Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm, from Ibn Yaʿqūb. He was asked: Is the statement of the one who said 'from Abū Hurayrah' dearer to you, or the statement of the one who said 'from Abū Saʿīd'? He said: The statement of the one who said 'from Abū Saʿīd'.
