أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ الْجُمَحِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْعَلَاءُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ
أَتَيْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ فَقُلْتُ أَسَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ فِي الْإِزَارِ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ «إِزْرَةُ الْمُؤْمِنِ إِلَى أَنْصَافِ سَاقَيْهِ لَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ فِيمَا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْكَعْبَيْنِ وَمَا أَسْفَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَفِي النَّارِ لَا يَنْظُرُ اللَّهُ إِلَى مَنْ جَرَّ إِزَارَهُ بَطَرًا»

✧ I came to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and said, "Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say anything about the lower garment?" He said, "Yes, I heard him say, 'The lower garment of the believer is to the middle of his shins, and there is no blame on him for what is between that and the ankles. Whatever is below that is in the Fire. Allah will not look at the one who drags his lower garment out of arrogance.'"

Yaʿqūb, the father of al-ʿAlāʾ, from Abū Hurayrah. There is disagreement about Yaḥyā: Hishām al-Dastuwāʾī and Shaybān narrated it from him with this chain. Al-Awzāʿī narrated it in another copy from Yaḥyā, from Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm, from Abū Hurayrah, as a mursal report. Ayyūb b. Khālid and ʿAlī b. Rabīʿah said, from al-Awzāʿī, from Yaḥyā, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, but they both erred in it. The sound (ṣaḥīḥ) version from Yaḥyā is: from Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm, from Ibn Yaʿqūb. He was asked: Is the statement of the one who said 'from Abū Hurayrah' dearer to you, or the statement of the one who said 'from Abū Saʿīd'? He said: The statement of the one who said 'from Abū Saʿīd'.

Yaʿqūb al-Juhanī narrated to us, from his father, who said: I asked Abū Saʿīd, I said: Tell me, did you hear anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the waist-wrapper (izār)? And ʿAlī mentioned the hadith. ʿAlī said: Sufyān said: Do you see what Zāʾidah says, that there is nothing like this chain of transmission in this matter? Sufyān said: I say there is nothing about the izār like this.
