“The Prophet ﷺ saw a man praying two Rak’ah after the Subh prayer and said, ‘Is the Subh prayer to be offered twice?’ The man said to him: ‘I did not pray the two Rak’ah before it, so I prayed them (now).’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent.”

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationIf the pronoun refers to ʿAbdullāh, then it is mursal, because he did not meet him; and if it refers to Saʿīd, then Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm has been corroborated.

machine translationStrange (gharīb); Asad was alone in transmitting it as a connected report (mawṣūl).

  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationWeak (ḍaʿīf), disconnected (munqaṭiʿ) or mursal.

  • Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd

machine translationIts chain is not connected; Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm did not hear from Qays.

  • M. ibn Ḥibbān al-Bustī

machine translationIt is not permissible to use it as evidence.

machine translationIt is flawed by a break in the chain (inqiṭāʿ) between Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm al-Taymī and Qays.

machine translationIt is faulted because of criticism of Saʿd b. Saʿīd, its narrator. Ibn al-Qaṭṭān said: Saʿd b. Saʿīd is disputed. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal said of him: weak (ḍaʿīf), and Abū Ḥātim said: "muʾaddin" [unclear]. He said: there is disagreement over how this word is vocalised; some read it with a light second letter, meaning one who is ruined, and others with a doubled letter, meaning one who transmits well. He said: the hadith is disputed from its very origin; it is not called sound (ṣaḥīḥ), but rather fair (ḥasan).

  • Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyá b. Sharaf al-Nawawī

machine translationThe chain of this hadith is weak (ḍaʿīf) according to the hadith scholars, and it contains a break (inqiṭāʿ).

  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationIts chain is not connected (muttaṣil): Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm al-Taymī did not hear from Qays.
