حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ ثنا أَبِي ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ قَالَا ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ الصَّوَّافِ حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ عَنْ هِلَالِ بْنِ أَبِي مَيْمُونَةَ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ السُّلَمِيِّ قَالَ
صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ فَقُلْتُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ فَرَمَانِي الْقَوْمُ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ فَقُلْتُ وَاثُكْلَ أُمَّيَاهُ مَا شَأْنُكُمْ تَنْظُرُونَ إِلَيَّ؟ فَجَعَلُوا يَضْرِبُونَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ عَلَى أَفْخَاذِهِمْ فَعَرَفْتُ أَنَّهُمْ يُصَمِّتُونِي لَكِنِّي سَكَتُّ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِأَبِي هُوَ وَأُمِّي مَا ضَرَبَنِي وَمَا كَهَرَنِي وَلَا سَبَّنِي ثُمَّ قَالَ «إِنَّ هَذِهِ الصَّلَاةَ لَا يَحِلُّ فِيهَا شَيْءٌ مِنْ كَلَامِ النَّاسِ هَذَا إِنَّمَا هُوَ التَّسْبِيحُ وَالتَّكْبِيرُ وَقِرَاءَةُ الْقُرْآنِ» أَوْ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ

✧ I prayed with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and a man from the people sneezed, so I said: May God have mercy on you. The people stared at me, so I said: Woe is my mother! What is the matter with you that you look at me? They began striking their hands on their thighs, so I knew they were signaling me to be quiet, but I remained silent. When the Messenger of God ﷺ had finished praying—may my father and mother be his ransom—he did not strike me, nor scold me, nor revile me. Then he said: "Indeed, this prayer is not permissible for any of people's speech in it. It is only glorification, magnification, and recitation of the Qur'an," or as the Messenger of God ﷺ said.
