✧ I said — meaning to Ibn 'Abbas — 'I have a mother in the city, and I go on these military campaigns. Will it suffice her if I manumit a slave, though she is not with me?' He said, 'Shall I not tell you something more astonishing than that? I ordered the wife of Sinan b. 'Abdullah al-Juhani to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for me about her mother who had died without performing Hajj: would it suffice her mother if she performed Hajj on her behalf?' He said, 'Yes. If her mother had a debt and she paid it on her behalf, would that not suffice her? So let her perform Hajj on behalf of her mother.'
