✧ That his father Rabi'a b. al-Harith and al-'Abbas b. 'Abd al-Muttalib said to 'Abd al-Muttalib b. Rabi'a and al-Fadl b. 'Abbas: Go to the Messenger of God ﷺ and say to him: O Messenger of God, we have reached the age you see, and we would like to marry. You, O Messenger of God, are the most dutiful and most connected of people, and our fathers do not have what they can spend on us. Appoint us, O Messenger of God, over the zakat collections, and we will deliver to you as the agents deliver, and we will earn from it whatever benefit there is. He said: Then 'Ali b. Abi Talib came while we were in that state and said to us: The Messenger of God ﷺ, no by God, will not appoint any of you over zakat. Rabi'a b. al-Harith said to him: This is from your envy; you have attained the good of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and we did not envy you for it. He threw off his cloak, then lay down on it, then said: I am Abu Hasan the chief. By God, I will not leave my place here until your two sons return to you with the answer of what you sent to the Messenger of God ﷺ. 'Abd al-Muttalib said: I and al-Fadl went until the noon prayer had been established, and we prayed with the people. Then I and al-Fadl hurried to the door of the room of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he was that day with Zaynab bt. Jahsh. We stood at the door until the Messenger of God ﷺ came, took hold of my ear and al-Fadl's ear, then said: "Bring out what you are hiding." Then he entered and gave permission to me and al-Fadl. We entered and deferred speech a little, then I spoke to him, or al-Fadl spoke to him—'Abd Allah b. al-Harith was uncertain about that. He said: When we spoke to him with what our fathers had commanded us, the Messenger of God ﷺ was silent for a while and raised his eyes toward the ceiling of the house until it seemed long to us that he would not return anything, until we saw Zaynab motioning from behind the screen with her hands not to be hasty and that the Messenger of God ﷺ was considering our matter. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ lowered his head and said to us: "This zakat is only the filth of people, and it is not lawful for Muhammad or the family of Muhammad. Call Nawfal b. al-Harith for me." So he called Nawfal b. al-Harith, and he said: "O Nawfal, marry 'Abd al-Muttalib." So he married me. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Call Mahmiya b. Jaz'." He was a man from Banu Zubayd whom the Messenger of God ﷺ had appointed over the fifth shares. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to Mahmiya: "Marry al-Fadl." So Mahmiya b. Jaz' married him. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Arise and pay on their behalf from the fifth shares so-and-so."
