✧ Umar used to invite me with the companions of Muhammad ﷺ and say to me: Do not speak until they speak. He said: He invited them and asked them about Laylat al-Qadr. He said: What do you think of the saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "Seek it in the last ten"? On which night do you think it is? He said: Some of them said: The night of the first, some said: The night of the third, and another said: The fifth, while I was silent. He said: He said: What is the matter with you that you do not speak? He said: I said: If you permit me, O Commander of the Faithful, I will speak. He said: He said: I did not send for you except that you should speak. He said: I said: Shall I tell you my opinion? He said: [He said:] About that we ask you. He said: I said: The seventh, for I saw that Allah — Mighty and Majestic — mentioned seven heavens and of the earth the like thereof, and He created man from seven, and the growth of the earth is seven. He said: He said: This you have told me of what I know. What do you think of what I do not know? What is your saying: The growth of the earth is seven? He said: I said: Allah says: "Then We split the earth in clefts, and We caused to grow therein" up to His saying "and fruits and herbage", and herbage is what the earth produces of that which the animals eat and people do not eat. He said: Umar said: Were you unable to say as this young man said, whose skull bones have not yet joined? By Allah, I do not see the correct view except as you have said. And he said: I had commanded you not to speak until they speak, but now I command you to speak with them.
