✧ Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded Yaḥyā b. Zakariyyā with five statements to act upon and to command the Children of Israel to act upon. He said: He was slow in acting upon them, so ʿĪsā said to him: “You were commanded with five statements to act upon and to command the Children of Israel to act upon. Either you command them or I will stand and command them.” Yaḥyā said: “If you precede me in them, I fear that I will be punished or the earth will swallow me.” So he gathered the Children of Israel in Jerusalem until the mosque was filled, to the point that people sat on the balconies. He admonished the people, then said: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded me with five statements to act upon and to command you to act upon. The first of them: that you do not associate anything with Allah. The likeness of one who associates partners with Allah is like a man who buys a slave with his own pure wealth, of gold or silver, then says to him: ‘This is my house and my work, so work for me and deliver to me your labor.’ But the slave works and delivers his labor to someone other than his master. Which of you would like to have a slave like that, who delivers his labor to someone other than his master? Allah is the one who created you and provided for you, so do not associate anything with Allah. And he said: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded you with prayer. When you set your faces (toward the qiblah), do not turn away, for Allah sets His face toward the face of His servant when he prays to Him, and He does not turn His face away from him until the servant himself turns away.”
