Mention of what God revealed in the Qurʾān concerning Uḥud
Translation
✧ Mention of what befell them and His consolation of them for it. Then He turned to mention the affliction that descended upon them, the trial that struck them, the purging of what was in them, and His taking martyrs from among them. He said, as a consolation to them and as an instruction to them concerning what they had done and what He would do with them: “Ways of life have passed away before you; so travel in the earth and behold how was the end of those who denied” — that is, punitive events of Mine have already passed against the people who denied My messengers and associated others with Me: ʿĀd, Thamūd, the people of Lūṭ, and the men of Madyan. They saw exemplary punishments that had already come from Me upon them, and upon whoever is upon the like of what they were upon of that from Me; for I granted them respite — that is, lest they suppose that My vengeance has been cut off from your enemy and My enemy because of the turn of fortune with which they prevailed over you, that He might try you thereby, to teach you what is with you. Then He, exalted be He, said: “This is an exposition for mankind, and a guidance and an admonition for the God-fearing” — that is, this is an explanation for mankind if they accept the guidance, and a guidance and an admonition: that is, a light and a discipline for the God-fearing, that is, for whoever obeys Me and knows My command. “And do not weaken, nor grieve” — that is, do not become feeble and do not despair over what has befallen you, “while you are the uppermost” — that is, yours shall be the final outcome and the victory, “if you are believers” — that is, if you have believed My prophet in what he brought you from Me. “If a wound touches you, a like wound has already touched the people” — that is, wounds like them. “And these days We alternate among mankind” — that is, We turn them among mankind for trial and purging, “and that Allah may know those who believe and take martyrs from among you; and Allah does not love the wrongdoers” — that is, that He may distinguish between the believers and the hypocrites, and that He may honor whom He honors of the people of faith with martyrdom; “and Allah does not love the wrongdoers” — that is, the hypocrites who show obedience with their tongues while their hearts persist in disobedience. “And that Allah may purge those who believe” — that is, that He may test those who believe until He purifies them through the trial that descended upon them, and how their patience and certainty are. “And that He may efface the disbelievers” — that is, that He may nullify the saying of the hypocrites with their tongues of what is not in their hearts, until their disbelief, which they conceal, becomes manifest from them.
