Mention of what God revealed in the Qurʾān concerning Uḥud

Translation

✧ [The Call of Paradise for the Strivers] Then He, exalted be He, said: 'Or did you think that you would enter Paradise while Allah has not yet made known those among you who have striven and made known the patient?' That is, did you think that you would enter Paradise and attain the honour of My reward while I have not tested you with hardship and tried you with adversities, until I know the truth of that from you through faith in Me and patience in what befalls you for My sake? 'And you had been longing for martyrdom' upon the truth that you were following 'before you met your enemy' – meaning those who urged the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to lead them out to their enemy, because they had missed being present on the day before it at Badr, and out of desire for the martyrdom that had escaped them there. So He said: 'And you had been longing for death before you met it.' He says: 'Now you have seen it while you were looking on' – that is, death by the swords in the hands of men; it was left between you and them while you were looking at them, then He turned them away from you. 'And Muhammad is but a messenger; messengers have passed away before him. If then he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels? And whoever turns back on his heels will not harm Allah in anything; and Allah will reward the thankful.' That is, concerning the people's saying 'Muhammad has been killed ﷺ', and their defeat at that moment, and their withdrawal from their enemy: if he dies or is killed, will you return from your religion as disbelievers as you were before, and abandon the struggle against your enemy and the Book of Allah and what His Prophet ﷺ left among you and with you of his religion, when He has made clear to you in what he brought you from Me that he would die and part from you? 'And whoever turns back on his heels' – that is, turns away from his religion – 'will not harm Allah in anything' – that is, that does not diminish the might of Allah, exalted be He, nor His dominion, nor His authority, nor His power. 'And Allah will reward the thankful' – that is, those who obey Him and act according to His command.
