The Messenger's departure in pursuit of the enemy to intimidate them

Translation

✧ [The Messenger's going out after the enemy to overawe them] He said: When it was the morrow, Sunday, sixteen nights having passed of Shawwāl, the muʾadhdhin of the Messenger of God ﷺ called out among the people to seek the enemy. His muʾadhdhin announced that none should go out with us except one who had been present with us yesterday. Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Ḥarām spoke to him, saying: O Messenger of God, my father left me behind over seven sisters of mine, and said: O my little son, it is not fitting for me or for you to leave these women with no man among them. I am not one to prefer you over myself for striving alongside the Messenger of God ﷺ, so stay behind over your sisters. So I stayed behind over them. The Messenger of God ﷺ gave him permission, and he went out with him. The Messenger of God ﷺ went out only to overawe the enemy, and to let them know that he had gone out in pursuit of them, so that they would think him strong, and that what had befallen them had not weakened them against their enemy.
