Translation
✧ [The washing of the swords] Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ reached his family, he handed his sword to his daughter Fāṭimah and said, “Wash the blood from this, my little daughter, for by God it has served me well today.” ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib also handed her his sword and said, “And this one too—wash the blood from it, for by God it has served me well today.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “If you have fought well, then Saḥl b. Ḥunayf and Abū Dujānah fought well alongside you.” Ibn Hishām said: The sword of the Messenger of God ﷺ was called Dhū al-Faqār. Ibn Hishām said: Someone knowledgeable told me that Ibn Abī Najīḥ said: A caller called out on the day of Uḥud: “There is no sword but Dhū al-Faqār and no young warrior but ʿAlī.” Ibn Hishām said: Someone knowledgeable told me that the Messenger of God ﷺ said to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib: “The polytheists will not afflict us with its like again until God grants us victory.” Ibn Isḥāq said: The day of Uḥud was Saturday, the middle of Shawwāl.
