The affair of the Dīnārī woman

Translation

✧ [The account of the woman from the Banū Dīnār] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Abī ʿAwn related to me, from Ismāʿīl b. Muḥammad, from Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ passed by a woman of the Banū Dīnār whose husband, brother, and father had been struck down alongside the Messenger of God ﷺ at Uḥud. When they were announced dead to her, she said: 'What then has happened to the Messenger of God ﷺ?' They said: 'He is well, O mother of so-and-so; he is, by God's praise, as you would wish.' She said: 'Show him to me so that I may look at him?' He said: So he was pointed out to her, until when she saw him she said: 'Every misfortune after you is jalā'—meaning small. Ibn Hishām said: al-jalā may be from the little and from the much, and here it is from the little. Imruʾ al-Qays said concerning al-jalā meaning little: 'The killing of the Banū Asad their lord— lo, everything other than him is jalā.' Ibn Hishām said: As for the poet's saying—and he is al-Ḥārith b. Waʿla al-Jarmī— 'If I pardon, I will surely pardon jalā, and if I strike, I will surely weaken my bone,' it is from the much.
