The weeping of the Anṣārī women for Ḥamza
Translation
✧ [The weeping of the Anṣār women over Ḥamzah] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ passed by a house of the houses of the Anṣār, belonging to the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal and Ẓafar, and heard weeping and wailing over their slain. The eyes of the Messenger of God ﷺ shed tears, and he wept. Then he said: 'But Ḥamzah has no weepers.' When Saʿd b. Muʿādh and Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr returned to the dwellings of the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, they ordered their women to gird themselves, then go and weep over the uncle of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥakīm b. Ḥakīm related to me, from ʿAbbād b. Ḥunayf, from one of the men of the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, who said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ heard their weeping over Ḥamzah, he went out to them while they were at the door of his mosque, weeping over him, and said: 'Return, may God have mercy on you. You have indeed consoled one another with your own selves.' Ibn Hishām said: Wailing was forbidden on that day. Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿUbaydah related to me that when the Messenger of God ﷺ heard their weeping, he said: 'May God have mercy on the Anṣār, for consoling one another is indeed an ancient custom of theirs. Order them to depart.'
