The account of those killed at Uḥud

Translation

✧ [The matter of the slain at Uḥud] The people turned to their slain, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said, as Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Ṣaʿṣaʿah al-Māzinī, brother of the Banū al-Najjār, related to me: "Who is a man who will look for me what Saʿd b. al-Rabīʿ has done? Is he among the living or among the dead?" A man from the Anṣār said: "I will look for you, O Messenger of God, what Saʿd has done." So he looked and found him wounded among the slain, and there was still a spark of life in him. He said: I said to him: "The Messenger of God ﷺ commanded me to look whether you are among the living or among the dead." He said: "I am among the dead, so convey my greeting to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and say to him: 'Saʿd b. al-Rabīʿ says to you: May God reward you on our behalf with the best reward He has rewarded any prophet on behalf of his community.' And convey my greeting to your people, and say to them: 'Saʿd b. al-Rabīʿ says to you: You have no excuse before God if any harm reaches your Prophet ﷺ while a single eye among you blinks.'" He said: Then I did not leave until he died. He said: Then I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and informed him of his news. Ibn Hishām said: Abū Bakr al-Zubayrī related to me that a man entered upon Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, while a daughter of Saʿd b. al-Rabīʿ, a little girl, was on his chest and he was sucking her and kissing her. The man said to him: "Who is this?" He said: "This is the daughter of a man better than me, Saʿd b. al-Rabīʿ, who was one of the nuqabāʾ on the Day of al-ʿAqabah, witnessed Badr, and was martyred on the Day of Uḥud."
