Hind and her mutilation of Ḥamza

Translation

✧ Hind and her mutilation of Ḥamzah Ibn Isḥāq said: Hind bt. ʿUtbah, as Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān related to me, and the women who were with her fell to mutilating the slain among the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ, cutting off ears and noses, until Hind made of the men’s ears and noses anklets and necklaces, and she gave her anklets, her necklaces, and her earrings to Waḥshī, the slave of Jubayr b. Muṭʿim. And she ripped open the liver of Ḥamzah and chewed it, but she could not swallow it, so she spat it out. Then she climbed onto a high rock and screamed at the top of her voice, saying: We have repaid you for the day of Badr, and war after war is blazing. I had no endurance for ʿUtbah, nor for my brother, his uncle, and my first-born. I have healed my soul and fulfilled my vow; you have healed, Waḥshī, the burning in my breast. So thanks to Waḥshī be upon me as long as I live, until my bones decay in my grave. Poem of Hind bt. Uthāthah in reply to Hind bt. ʿUtbah Hind bt. Uthāthah b. ʿAbbād b. al-Muṭṭalib answered her, saying: You were disgraced at Badr and after Badr, O daughter of a great traducer of unbelief. God brought upon you at dawn of the morning the two Hāshimīs, tall and radiant, with every cutting sharp sword that slices. Ḥamzah is my lion and ʿAlī is my falcon, when Shaybah and your father resolved on treachery; they dyed from him the sides of the throat. And your vow was an evil one, so the worst of vows. Ibn Hishām said: We have omitted three verses from it in which she used obscene language. Another poem by Hind bt. ʿUtbah Ibn Isḥāq said: Hind bt. ʿUtbah also said: I healed my soul from Ḥamzah at Uḥud, until I ripped open his belly for the liver. That removed from me what I had been feeling of the sting of intense, overwhelming grief. And war assails you with a cold downpour, advancing upon you like a lion.
