The killing of Mukhayrīq
Translation
✧ Ibn Hishām's verification concerning who killed al-Mujadhdhar: Ibn Hishām said: Someone I trust among the people of knowledge related to me that al-Ḥārith b. Suwayd killed al-Mujadhdhar b. Dhiyād, and did not kill Qays b. Zayd. The evidence for that is that Ibn Isḥāq did not mention him among the slain of Uḥud. He only killed al-Mujadhdhar because al-Mujadhdhar b. Dhiyād had killed his father Suwayd in one of the wars that took place between the Aws and the Khazraj, and we have already mentioned that earlier in this book. While the Messenger of God ﷺ was among a group of his companions, al-Ḥārith b. Suwayd came out from one of the gardens of Madinah wearing two garments dyed red. The Messenger of God ﷺ ordered ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān concerning him, and he struck his neck; and it is said: one of the Anṣār. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muʿādh b. ʿAfrāʾ killed Suwayd b. al-Ṣāmit by treachery, not in war, shooting him with an arrow and killing him before the Day of Buʿāth. The affair of Uṣayrim: Ibn Isḥāq said: al-Ḥuṣayn b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAmr b. Saʿd b. Muʿādh related to me from Abū Sufyān, the client of Ibn Abī Aḥmad, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: He used to say: Tell me about a man who entered Paradise without ever having prayed. When the people did not know him, they asked: Who is he? He would say: Uṣayrim of the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, ʿAmr b. Thābit b. Waqsh. Al-Ḥuṣayn said: I said to Maḥmūd b. Asad: How was the affair of al-Uṣayrim? He said: He used to refuse Islam against his people. Then on the day when the Messenger of God ﷺ went out to Uḥud, the idea of Islam occurred to him, and he became a Muslim. Then he took his sword and ran until he entered among the mass of the people, and he fought until wounds disabled him. He said: While men of the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal were seeking their slain in the battlefield, they came upon him and said: By God, this is al-Uṣayrim! What brought him? We left him while he was a denier of this matter. They asked him what brought him; they said: What brought you, O ʿAmr? Concern for your people or desire for Islam? He said: Rather desire for Islam. I believed in God and His Messenger, and I became a Muslim. Then I took my sword and went forth with the Messenger of God ﷺ, then I fought until what befell me befell me. Then he did not linger before he died in their hands. They mentioned him to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said: He is indeed among the people of Paradise.
