The killing of Mukhayrīq
Translation
✧ [The killing of Mukhayrīq] Ibn Isḥāq said: Among those killed on the day of Uḥud was Mukhayrīq, who was one of the Banū Thaʿlabah b. al-Fiṭyūn. He said: When it was the day of Uḥud, he said: "O assembly of Jews, by Allah, you know that the victory of Muḥammad over you is certain." They said: "Today is the Sabbath." He said: "There is no Sabbath for you." Then he took his sword and his equipment and said: "If I am struck down, then my wealth is for Muḥammad, to do with it as he wills." Then he went early to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and fought with him until he was killed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said—as it has reached us—"Mukhayrīq is the best of the Jews." [The affair of al-Ḥārith b. Suwayd] Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Ḥārith b. Suwayd b. Ṣāmit was a hypocrite. He went out on the day of Uḥud with the Muslims, and when the people met in battle, he attacked al-Mujadhdhar b. Dhiyād al-Balawī and Qays b. Zayd, one of the Banū Ḍubayʿah, and killed them both. Then he joined Quraysh in Makkah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ—as they mention—had ordered ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb to kill him if he got hold of him, but he escaped him, and he remained in Makkah. Then he sent to his brother al-Julās b. Suwayd seeking repentance, so that he might return to his people. Then Allah, exalted is He, revealed concerning him—as it has reached me—on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: "How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and bore witness that the Messenger is true, and clear proofs came to them? And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people" to the end of the narrative.
