The slaying of Ḥāṭib and his father's saying

Translation

✧ [The killing of Ḥāṭib and his father's saying] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah related to me that a man among them was called Ḥāṭib b. Umayyah b. Rāfiʿ, and he had a son named Yazīd b. Ḥāṭib, who was wounded on the day of Uḥud. He was brought to the abode of his people while he was on the point of death. The people of the abode gathered around him, and the Muslims, men and women, began saying to him: Rejoice, O son of Ḥāṭib, in Paradise. He said: Ḥāṭib was an old man who had grown old in the age of ignorance, and on that day his hypocrisy emerged, and he said: With what do you give him glad tidings? With a garden of ḥarmal? By God, you have deceived this lad about himself. [The killing of Quzmān as a hypocrite, as the messenger related] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah related to me, saying: There was among us a man who had come, it was not known from whom he was, called Quzmān. The Messenger of God ﷺ used to say, whenever he was mentioned to him: He is indeed one of the people of the Fire. He said: When the day of Uḥud came, he fought fiercely, and alone he killed eight or seven of the polytheists, for he was possessed of great courage. Then wounds disabled him, and he was carried to the abode of Banū Ẓafar. He said: Some of the Muslim men began saying to him: By God, you have fought valiantly today, O Quzmān, so rejoice. He said: In what should I rejoice? By God, I fought only for the honor of my people, and had it not been for that, I would not have fought. He said: When his wounds became severe, he took an arrow from his quiver and killed himself with it.
