The slaying of Ubayy b. Khalaf

Translation

✧ [The killing of Ubayy b. Khalaf] He said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ was given support in the mountain pass, Ubayy b. Khalaf caught up with him, saying: "O Muhammad, may I not escape if you escape." The people said: "O Messenger of God, shall one of us turn on him?" The Messenger of God said: "Leave him." When he drew near, the Messenger of God ﷺ took the spear from al-Ḥārith b. al-Ṣimmah; some of the people say, as was mentioned to me: When the Messenger of God ﷺ took it from him, he shook it with a shake, and we scattered from him like the scattering of the shuʿrāʾ flies from a camel's back when it shakes them off. Ibn Hishām said: The shuʿrāʾ is a fly that has a sting. Then he faced him and thrust him in his neck with a thrust from which he fell from his horse several times. Ibn Hishām said: Tadʾadaʾa, that is, he tumbled from his horse and began to roll over. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ubayy b. Khalaf, as Ṣāliḥ b. Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf related to me, used to meet the Messenger of God ﷺ in Makkah and say: "O Muhammad, I have al-ʿAwdh, a horse which I feed every day a faraq of dhurah, and on it I will kill you." The Messenger of God ﷺ would say: "Rather, I will kill you, if God wills." When he returned to Quraysh and he had scratched him in his neck, a scratch not large, and the blood had congested, he said: "Muhammad has killed me, by God." They said to him: "By God, your heart has gone; by God, there is no harm in you." He said: "He had said to me in Makkah: 'I will kill you.' By God, if he had spat on me, it would have killed me." So the enemy of God died at Sarif while they were returning with him to Makkah.
