What the Messenger suffered on the day of Uḥud

Translation

✧ [ What wounds Ibn ʿAwf suffered ] Ibn Hishām said: One of the people of knowledge related to me that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf was struck in the mouth that day and had his front teeth broken, and he received twenty wounds or more, some of which struck his leg, leaving him lame. [ The first to recognize the Messenger after the rout ] Ibn Isḥāq said: The first to recognize the Messenger of God ﷺ after the rout and the people's saying “the Messenger of God ﷺ has been killed,” as Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī mentioned to me, was Kaʿb b. Mālik. He said: I recognized his eyes gleaming from beneath the helmet, and I called out at the top of my voice: “O company of Muslims, rejoice! This is the Messenger of God ﷺ.” The Messenger of God ﷺ gestured to me to be silent. Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Muslims recognized the Messenger of God ﷺ, they rose with him, and he moved with them toward the mountain pass, accompanied by Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, Ṭalḥa b. ʿUbayd Allāh, al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām, may God be pleased with them, al-Ḥārith b. al-Ṣimma, and a group of Muslims.
