The slaying of Ubayy b. Khalaf
Translation
✧ [The poetry of Ḥassān concerning the slaying of Ubayy b. Khalaf] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit said concerning that: Ubayy inherited error from his father on the day the Messenger fought him in single combat. You came to him carrying decayed bone, threatening him, while you were ignorant of him. The Banū al-Najjār killed among you Umayyah when he cried for help: “O ʿAqīl!” And the two sons of Rabīʿah perished when they obeyed Abū Jahl—for their mother is the bereft one. Ḥārith escaped when we were occupied with capturing the people; his clan is a long night. Ibn Hishām said: usratuhu means his tribe. And Ḥassān b. Thābit also said concerning that: Is there none to convey from me to Ubayy that you have been cast into the farthest reaches of the blaze? You wished for error from afar and swore that you had power alongside the vows. Your wishing of wishes from afar, and the word of disbelief returns in deception. The spear-thrust of a protector met you—noble of house, not one of wickedness. He has virtue over all the living tribes when momentous affairs befall.
