What the Messenger suffered on the day of Uḥud
Translation
✧ [The trial of Qatādah and the account of his eye] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah related to me that the Messenger of God ﷺ shot from his bow until its siyah broke, and Qatādah b. al-Nuʿmān took it, and it remained with him. On that day the eye of Qatādah b. al-Nuʿmān was struck until it fell onto his cheek. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah related to me that the Messenger of God ﷺ put it back with his hand, and it became the better of his two eyes and the sharper of them. [The affair of Anas b. al-Naḍr] Ibn Isḥāq said: al-Qāsim b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Rāfiʿ, the brother of the Banū ʿAdī b. al-Najjār, related to me, saying: Anas b. al-Naḍr, the paternal uncle of Anas b. Mālik, came upon ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb and Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh among men of the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār, and they had thrown down their hands. He said: "What keeps you sitting?" They said: "The Messenger of God ﷺ has been killed." He said: "Then what will you do with life after him? Rise, and die upon that upon which the Messenger of God ﷺ died." Then he faced the people and fought until he was killed. And after him Anas b. Mālik was named. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl related to me from Anas b. Mālik, who said: We found on Anas b. al-Naḍr on that day seventy wounds, and no one recognized him except his sister; she recognized him by his fingertips.
