What the Messenger suffered on the day of Uḥud
Translation
✧ [The account of Umm Saʿd concerning her share in the struggle on the day of Uḥud] Ibn Hishām said: Umm ʿUmārah, Nusaybah bt. Kaʿb al-Māzinīyah, fought on the day of Uḥud. Saʿīd b. Abī Zayd al-Anṣārī mentioned that Umm Saʿd bt. Saʿd b. al-Rabīʿ used to say: I entered upon Umm ʿUmārah and said to her, “O maternal aunt, tell me your news.” She said: I went out at the beginning of the day, and I was looking at what the people were doing, and with me was a waterskin containing water. I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was among his companions, and the turn and the wind were for the Muslims. When the Muslims were defeated, I withdrew to the Messenger of God ﷺ and stood to engage directly in the fighting, defending him with the sword and shooting with the bow, until the wounds reached me. She said: I saw on her shoulder a gaping wound with a deep cavity, and I said, “Who struck you with this?” She said: Ibn Qamiʾah—may God abase him. When the people turned away from the Messenger of God ﷺ, he came forward saying, “Show me Muḥammad; I will not survive if he survives.” I confronted him, along with Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr and some people who stood firm with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he struck me this blow. But I struck him several blows in return. However, the enemy of God had on two coats of mail. [Abū Dujānah and Ibn Abī Waqqāṣ defending the Messenger] Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū Dujānah shielded the Messenger of God ﷺ with his own body, with arrows falling on his back while he was bent over him, until the arrows became numerous in him. And Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ shot in defense of the Messenger of God. Saʿd said: I saw him handing me arrows and saying, “Shoot, may my father and mother be your ransom,” until he handed me an arrow that had no arrowhead, and he said, “Shoot with it.”
