What the Messenger suffered on the day of Uḥud

Translation

✧ [Ḥassān's poetry about ʿUtbah and what he did to the Messenger] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit said about ʿUtbah b. Abī Waqqāṣ: When God recompenses a people for their deeds and the Merciful, Lord of the easts, harms them, then may my Lord disgrace you, O ʿUtayb b. Mālik, and make you meet before death one of the thunderbolts. You stretched out a right hand deliberately against the Prophet, and made his mouth bleed — may it be cut off by the lightnings. Why did you not remember God and the abode to which you will go at one of the calamities? Ibn Hishām said: We have omitted two verses in which he used foul language. [Ibn al-Sakan and his bravery on the day of Uḥud] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said, when the people overwhelmed him: “Who is a man who will sell his life for us?” as al-Ḥuṣayn b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAmr b. Saʿd b. Muʿādh narrated to me, from Maḥmūd b. ʿAmr. He said: Ziyād b. al-Sakan stood up among a group of five of the Anṣār — and some people say: it was only ʿUmārah b. Yazīd b. al-Sakan — and they fought in defense of the Messenger of God ﷺ, one man after another, being killed in his defense, until the last of them was Ziyād or ʿUmārah. He fought until wounds disabled him, then a band of the Muslims returned and drove them away from him. The Messenger of God said: “Bring him close to me.” So they brought him close to him, and he placed his foot as a pillow for him, and he died with his cheek on the foot of the Messenger of God ﷺ.
