What the Messenger suffered on the day of Uḥud
Translation
✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: The Muslims were routed, and the enemy struck among them. It was a day of trial and purification, on which God honored with martyrdom those of the Muslims whom He honored, until the enemy reached the Messenger of God ﷺ. He was pelted with stones until he fell on his side. His front tooth was broken, his face was gashed, and his lip was wounded. The one who struck him was ʿUtbah b. Abī Waqqāṣ. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl related to me, from Anas b. Mālik, who said: The Prophet’s ﷺ front tooth was broken on the day of Uḥud and his face was gashed. Blood began to flow down his face, and he began wiping away the blood while saying: “How can a people prosper who have stained the face of their Prophet while he calls them to their Lord?” Thus God, Mighty and Majestic, sent down concerning that: “You have no part in the matter, whether He turns to them or punishes them, for they are wrongdoers.” Ibn Hishām said: Rubayḥ b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Saʿīd al-Khudrī mentioned, from his father, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī: that ʿUtbah b. Abī Waqqāṣ shot at the Messenger of God ﷺ that day, breaking his lower right front tooth and wounding his lower lip; that ʿAbd Allāh b. Shihāb al-Zuhrī gashed his forehead; and that Ibn Qamiʾah wounded his cheek, so that two rings from the helmet entered his cheek. The Messenger of God ﷺ fell into one of the pits which Abū ʿĀmir had dug for the Muslims to fall into, they not knowing. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib took the hand of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh lifted him up until he stood upright. Mālik b. Sinān, Abū Abī Saʿīd al-Khudrī, sucked the blood from the face of the Messenger of God ﷺ and swallowed it. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Whoever’s blood touches my blood, the Fire will not touch him.” Ibn Hishām said: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Muḥammad al-Darāwardī mentioned that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever wishes to look at a martyr walking on the face of the earth, let him look at Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh.” And he mentioned, meaning ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Darāwardī, from Isḥāq b. Yaḥyā b. Ṭalḥah, from ʿĪsā b. Ṭalḥah, from ʿĀʾishah, from Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq: that Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ pulled out one of the two rings from the face of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and his front tooth fell out; then he pulled out the other, and his other front tooth fell out. Thus he was missing both front teeth.
