Incitement to fight the Messenger

Translation

✧ [The Withdrawal of the Hypocrites] Ibn Isḥāq said: When they were at al-Shawṭ, between Madinah and Uḥud, ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy b. Salūl withdrew from him with a third of the people, and said: "He obeyed them and disobeyed me. We do not know why we should kill ourselves here, O people." So he returned with those who followed him from his people, from the people of hypocrisy and doubt. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Ḥarām, brother of the Banū Salimah, followed them, saying: "O my people, I remind you of God, that you should not desert your people and your Prophet when their enemy has come upon them." They said: "If we knew that you would fight, we would not abandon you, but we do not think there will be any fighting." He said: When they defied him and refused anything but to turn away from them, he said: "May God make you distant, enemies of God. God will suffice His Prophet against you." Ibn Hishām said: Someone other than Ziyād mentioned, from Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, from al-Zuhrī, that the Anṣār on the day of Uḥud said to the Messenger of God ﷺ: "O Messenger of God, shall we seek help from our allies among the Jews?" He said: "We have no need of them." [An Incident from Which the Messenger Drew an Omen] Ziyād said: Muḥammad b. Isḥāq related to me, saying: The Messenger of God ﷺ went on until he entered the lava field of the Banū Ḥārithah. A horse lashed with its tail and struck the scabbard of a sword, drawing it out. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said: "kilāb of a sword." Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ, who loved good omens and did not practice augury, said to the owner of the sword: "Sheathe your sword, for I see that swords will be drawn today."
