Incitement to fight the Messenger

Translation

✧ [Consultation of the Messenger with the people about going out or remaining] Ibn Isḥāq said: “If you think it best to remain in Madinah and leave them where they have camped, then if they stay, they stay in the worst place, and if they enter upon us, we will fight them in it.” The opinion of ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy b. Salūl agreed with the opinion of the Messenger of God ﷺ, he held his view on that, and that he should not go out to them. The Messenger of God ﷺ disliked going out. Then men of the Muslims, among those whom God honoured with martyrdom on the day of Uḥud and elsewhere, among those who had missed Badr, said: “O Messenger of God, lead us out to our enemies, lest they think that we have been cowardly towards them and weak?” ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy b. Salūl said: “O Messenger of God, stay in Madinah; do not go out to them. By God, we have never gone out of it against an enemy of ours but that he struck at us, and none has ever entered it upon us but that we struck at him. Leave them, O Messenger of God; for if they stay, they stay in the worst confinement, and if they enter, the men will fight them face to face, and the women and boys will throw stones at them from above; and if they withdraw, they will withdraw disappointed, just as they came.” The people whose desire was to meet the enemy kept pressing the Messenger of God ﷺ until the Messenger of God ﷺ entered his house and put on his coat of mail—that was on Friday when he had finished the prayer. On that day a man of the Anṣār named Mālik b. ʿAmr, one of the Banū al-Najjār, had died, and the Messenger ﷺ prayed over him, then went out to them. The people had regretted it and said: “We have pressed the Messenger of God ﷺ, and that was not for us to do.” When the Messenger of God ﷺ came out to them, they said: “O Messenger of God, we pressed you, and that was not for us to do; if you wish, stay, may God bless you.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “It is not fitting for a prophet, once he has put on his coat of mail, to take it off until he fights.” Then the Messenger of God ﷺ went out with a thousand of his companions. Ibn Hishām said: He appointed Ibn Umm Maktūm to lead the people in prayer.
