Translation

✧ [The gathering of Quraysh for war] Quraysh gathered for war against the Messenger of God ﷺ when Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb and the owners of the caravan did that, with their Aḥābīsh and those of the tribes of Kinānah and the people of Tihāmah who obeyed them. Abū ʿAzzah ʿAmr b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Jumaḥī had been shown favor by the Messenger of God ﷺ on the day of Badr. He was poor, with a family and in need, and was among the captives. He said: 'I am poor, with a family and need that you know of, so show me favor, may God bless you and grant you peace.' So the Messenger of God ﷺ showed him favor. Ṣafwān b. Umayyah said to him: 'O Abū ʿAzzah, you are a poet, so help us with your tongue and come out with us.' He said: 'Muḥammad has shown me favor, and I do not wish to oppose him.' He said: 'Yes, help us with your person. I promise you by God that if I return I will enrich you, and if you are struck down I will place your daughters with my daughters, so that they share with them whatever hardship or ease befalls them.' So Abū ʿAzzah went out in Tihāmah, calling upon the Banū Kinānah and saying: 'Ho, Banū ʿAbd Manāt al-ruzzām, You are protectors and your father is a protector. Let not my helping you after this year exceed me, Do not abandon me; abandonment is not lawful.' Musāfiʿ b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Wahb b. Ḥudhāfah b. Jumaḥ went out to the Banū Mālik b. Kinānah, inciting them and calling them to war against the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: 'O Māl, Māl of the foremost noble lineage, I appeal by kinship and by solemn covenant, Whoever has kinship and whoever does not show mercy, To the alliance in the midst of the sacred sanctuary, At the Ḥaṭīm of the venerated Kaʿbah.' Jubayr b. Muṭʿim called a slave of his, an Abyssinian named Waḥshī, who threw with a javelin of his in the manner of the Abyssinians and rarely missed with it. He said to him: 'Go out with the people, and if you kill Ḥamzah, the paternal uncle of Muḥammad, in revenge for my uncle Ṭuʿaymah b. ʿAdī, then you are free.'
