Incitement to fight the Messenger
Translation
✧ The Expedition of Uḥud. And as for the account of Uḥud, as it was related to me by Muḥammad b. Muslim al-Zuhrī, and Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā b. Ḥibbān, and ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah, and al-Ḥuṣayn b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAmr b. Saʿd b. Muʿādh, and others from our scholars — each of them related part of the account of the Day of Uḥud, and their accounts have all been gathered together in what I have related of this account of the Day of Uḥud — they said, or whoever of them said it: [The Incitement to Fight the Messenger] When the disbelievers of Quraysh, the men of the pit, were struck down on the Day of Badr, and their defeated remnant returned to Makkah, and Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb returned with his caravan, ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Rabīʿah, and ʿIkrimah b. Abī Jahl, and Ṣafwān b. Umayyah, walked among men of Quraysh whose fathers, sons, and brothers had been struck down on the Day of Badr. They spoke to Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb and to those of Quraysh who had merchandise in that caravan, and they said: "O assembly of Quraysh, Muḥammad has bereaved you and killed the best of you, so assist us with this wealth to wage war against him, so that perhaps we may attain from him our revenge for those of us he has struck down." And they did so. [What Was Revealed in the Qurʾān Regarding That] Ibn Isḥāq said: Regarding them, as some of the people of knowledge have mentioned to me, God Most High revealed: "Indeed, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to bar from the way of God. They will spend it, then it will be a regret upon them, then they will be overcome; and those who disbelieve will be gathered to Hell."
