Translation
✧ [Poetry of Ibn al-Aswad in lament for the slain of Badr] Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū Bakr b. al-Aswad b. Shuʿūb al-Laythī, who is Shaddād b. al-Aswad, said: Umm Bakr greets with safety, Yet is there any safety for me after my people? What is at the well, the well of Badr, Of singing-girls and noble drinking companions? What is at the well, the well of Badr, Of shīzā wood crowned with fat? How many at the watering-place, the watering-place of Badr, Of dark camels and pasturing cattle? How many at the watering-place, the watering-place of Badr, Of banners and great banners? And the companions of the noble Abū ʿAlī, The brother of the noble cup and the drinking companions. If you had seen Abū ʿAqīl And the companions of the mountain pass from Naʿām, You would have remained in grief for them Like a she-camel whose young has perished, wandering in search. The Messenger tells us that we shall live again; But how is the meeting of echoes and skulls? Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿUbaydah al-Naḥwī recited to me: The Messenger tells us that we shall live again; But how is the life of echoes and skulls? He said: He had become a Muslim, then apostatized.
