Translation
✧ [Poem of al-Ḥārith b. Hishām in Elegy for Abū Jahl] Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Ḥārith b. Hishām said, weeping for his brother Abū Jahl: Alas, O grief of my soul after ʿAmr! Does grieving avail for one slain? The informer tells me that ʿAmr was before the people in a hollow, barren tract. Of old I used to think that true, while you, for what has passed, are not deceived. I was in ease as long as you lived; now I have been left behind in the stairways of the torrent-bed. It is as if, when I spend the evening not seeing him, I am weak of resolve, with prolonged anxiety, For ʿAmr, whenever I spend an evening, and an eye, from remembering him, is dimmed. Ibn Hishām said: Some of the people of knowledge in poetry deny that it is by al-Ḥārith b. Hishām; his saying “in a hollow” is from other than Ibn Isḥāq.
