Translation

✧ [Poetry of Ṭālib in praise of the Messenger and weeping for the companions of the pit] And Ṭālib b. Abī Ṭālib said, praising the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and weeping for the companions of the pit from Quraysh on the day of Badr: Alas, my eye has exhausted its tears, pouring forth Weeping for Kaʿb—and yet you do not see Kaʿb. Alas, Kaʿb in the wars they deserted one another, And time cast them down, and they committed a sin. And ʿĀmir—she weeps for calamities in the morning; Would that I knew whether I shall see for them any nearness. They are my two brothers, who will not be counted among any error That is counted, and whose neighbor will never be forced to yield. O my two brothers, ʿAbd Shams and Nawfal, A ransom for you both—do not stir up war between us. And do not become, after affection and intimacy, Tales in which every one of you complains of misfortune. Did you not know what happened in the war of Dāḥis And the army of Abū Yaksūm when they filled the mountain pass? Were it not for Allah's defense—there is nothing besides Him— You would have become unable to protect for yourselves even a flock. We have committed no great offense against Quraysh Except that we protected the best of those who have trodden the dust— A brother of trust in misfortunes, sorely tried, Generous, his praise far-reaching, neither miserly nor harsh. The seekers of bounty go around him, coming to his door, Aiming for a sea that is neither distant nor bitter. By Allah, my soul will not cease to be sorrowful, Tossing and turning, until you give the Khazraj a true blow.
