Translation

✧ Poetry of Kaʿb concerning Badr: Kaʿb b. Mālik also said, on the day of Badr: Alā, has news come to Ghassān in the remoteness of its abode— And the most knowing of matters is its learned one— That ʿAdnān's tribes have shot at us, together, from bows of enmity, its ignorant and its forbearing alike, Because we worshipped God, hoping for none other than Him— the hope of the Gardens—when its guarantor came to us, A prophet who has among his people an inherited might and true roots which its origins refined. So they marched and we marched, and we met as if we were lions of encounter, whose wounded is not hoped for. We struck them until there fell in our charge, upon an evil nostril, a great one of Luʾayy. They turned in flight, and we trampled them with white, sharp swords; equal to us are its confederate and its core. Kaʿb b. Mālik also said: By the life of your father, O Banū Luʾayy, amidst pride among you and haughtiness, your horsemen did not circle at Badr, nor did they endure there at the encounter. We brought him to it with God's light, which clears away the gloom of darkness from us, and the covering— the Messenger of God, leading us with a command from God's command, made firm by decree. Your horsemen did not triumph at Badr, nor did they return to you with equality. So do not hasten, Abū Sufyān, and await the steeds of horses emerging from Kadāʾ, with God's help, the Spirit of Holiness among them, and Mīkāl—how pleasant the assembly!
