Translation
✧ [Kaʿb's mourning for ʿUbaydah b. al-Ḥārith] Ibn Isḥāq said: When ʿUbaydah b. al-Ḥārith perished from the injury to his leg on the day of Badr, Kaʿb b. Mālik al-Anṣārī said, mourning him: O eye, be generous and do not begrudge your tears, truly, and do not fail; for a lord whose destruction has shattered us, noble in witness and origin; bold in advance, sharp in weapon, noble in praise, good in origin; ʿUbaydah has come to evening, and we do not hope for him for a kindness that has befallen us, nor for a denial. Indeed, he used to protect on the morning of battle the rear of the army with the cutting sword.
