Translation

✧ What was said of poetry on the day of Badr. Ibn Isḥāq said: Among what was said of poetry on the day of Badr, and the people exchanged it among themselves because of what took place in it, was the saying of Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, may God have mercy on him: Ibn Hishām said: Most of the people of knowledge in poetry reject it and its contradiction: Did you not see a matter that was among the wonders of time, and for death there are causes that make the affair clear? And that is only because a people, whom they benefited— they became, having enjoined one another to disobedience and disbelief, On the evening they went toward Badr with their gathered host, they became hostages for the well of Badr. We had sought the caravan, desiring nothing else, but they marched against us, so we met as decreed. And when we met, there was no turning back for us save thrusting with straightened brown spears, And striking with white swords whose edges reap the heads, flashing in color, clear in their marks. We left ʿUtbah of error lying low, and Shaybah among the slain, cast into the pit, And ʿAmr lay low among those who lay low of their defenders, so the bosoms of the wailing women were rent for ʿAmr— Bosoms of women from Luʾayy b. Ghālib, noble ones who parted their locks from Fihr. Those are a people who were slain in their error, and they left behind a banner not attended by victory— A banner of error whose people Iblīs led, and he failed them; indeed, the treacherous one is given to betrayal. He said to them, when he saw the affair clearly: "I am quit of you; I have no endurance today. For I see what you do not see, and I fear God's punishment; God is possessor of compulsion." So he brought them to destruction until they fell into it, and he had knowledge of what the people did not know. On the morning of the well they were a thousand, and our host was three hundred, like the bright, well-fed camels. Among us were the hosts of God, when He reinforced us with them in a station that then became clear in remembrance. Through them Jibrīl charged beneath our banner at a narrow pass where their fates were flowing.
