What was revealed concerning urging the Muslims to obey the Messenger

Translation

✧ [What was revealed urging the Muslims to obey the Messenger] Then He, exalted be He, said: "O you who believe, obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not turn away from him while you hear" — that is, do not oppose his command while you hear his word, and while you claim that you are of him. "And be not like those who said, 'We hear,' while they do not hear" — that is, like the hypocrites who show obedience to him and conceal disobedience to him. "Indeed, the worst of beasts in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not understand" — that is, the hypocrites whom I forbade you to be like; dumb to good, deaf to the truth, they do not understand: they do not know what punishment and consequence will befall them for that. "Had Allah known any good in them, He would have made them hear" — that is, He would have made effective for them the words they spoke with their tongues; but their hearts contradicted that within them. "And had He made them hear, they would have turned away while they were averse" — they would not have fulfilled for you anything of what they went out upon. "O you who believe, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life" — that is, to the war by which Allah honored you after humiliation, and strengthened you by it after weakness, and protected you by it from your enemy after their subjugation of you. "And remember when you were few and oppressed in the land, fearing that the people would snatch you away; then He sheltered you, and supported you with His help, and provided you with good things, that you might be grateful. O you who believe, do not betray Allah and the Messenger, nor betray your trusts while you know" — that is, do not show him of the truth what pleases him from you, then contradict him in secret to something else; for that is the ruin of your trusts and betrayal of yourselves. "O you who believe, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion, and expiate for you your sins, and forgive you; and Allah is the possessor of great bounty" — that is, a distinction between truth and falsehood, by which Allah may make your truth prevail and extinguish the falsehood of those who oppose you.
