What was revealed concerning the seeking of judgment

Translation

✧ What was revealed concerning the Messenger's throwing pebbles at the polytheists Then He said: "If you seek judgment, judgment has come to you" (Q 8:19) – that is, concerning Abū Jahl's saying: "O God, cut off family ties for us, and bring us what is not known, then destroy him this morning." Seeking judgment (istiftāḥ) is the fair request in supplication. God, glorified be His praise, says: "And if you desist" – that is, O Quraysh – "it is better for you; and if you return, We will return" – that is, with the like of the blow that struck you on the day of Badr – "and never will your company avail you anything, even if it is numerous; and [know] that God is with the believers" (Q 8:19) – that is, your number and your multitude in your own eyes will never avail you anything, and verily I am with the believers, helping them against those who oppose them.
