The conversion of ʿUmayr b. Wahb
Translation
✧ [The Prophet tells him what he and Safwan had plotted, and he accepts Islam] When the Messenger of God ﷺ saw him, with ʿUmar grasping the strap of his sword around his neck, he said: "Release him, ʿUmar. Draw near, ʿUmayr." He drew near and said: "A bright morning to you"—that was the greeting of the people of the Jāhiliyyah among themselves. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "God has honored us with a greeting better than your greeting, ʿUmayr: with 'Peace' (al-salām), the greeting of the people of Paradise." He said: "By God, Muhammad, I was still only recently accustomed to it." He said: "What has brought you, ʿUmayr?" He said: "I have come about this captive who is in your hands, so treat him well." He said: "Then what is the matter with the sword on your neck?" He said: "May God curse it among swords—has it availed us anything?" He said: "Tell me the truth: what is it that you have come for?" He said: "I have come only for that." He said: "Rather, you sat with Ṣafwān b. Umayyah in al-Ḥijr, and you two mentioned the dead of al-Qalīb from Quraysh. Then you said: 'Were it not for a debt upon me and dependents in my care, I would go out until I killed Muhammad.' So Ṣafwān undertook to bear your debt and your dependents, on condition that you kill me for him. God stands between you and that." ʿUmayr said: "I bear witness that you are the Messenger of God. Messenger of God, we used to declare you a liar in what you brought us of the news of heaven and what descended upon you of revelation. This is a matter that no one attended except me and Ṣafwān. By God, I know that nothing brought it to you but God. Praise be to God who guided me to Islam and drove me along this path." Then he bore witness with the testimony of truth. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Instruct your brother in his religion, teach him the Qurʾān, and release his captive for him." They did so.
