The conversion of ʿUmayr b. Wahb

Translation

✧ [His return to Makkah calling to Islam] Then he said: O Messenger of God, I was striving to extinguish the light of God, causing severe harm to those who followed the religion of God, Mighty and Majestic. I would like you to permit me to go to Makkah and call them to God Almighty, to His Messenger ﷺ, and to Islam. Perhaps God will guide them; otherwise, I will harm them in their religion just as I used to harm your companions in their religion. He said: So the Messenger of God ﷺ gave him permission, and he reached Makkah. Ṣafwān b. Umayyah, when ʿUmayr b. Wahb departed, was saying: Rejoice at a battle that will come to you now within days, making you forget the battle of Badr. And Ṣafwān kept asking travelers about him, until a rider arrived and informed him of his conversion to Islam. He swore never to speak to him again and never to benefit him in any way. Ibn Isḥāq said: When ʿUmayr arrived in Makkah, he stayed there calling to Islam and causing severe harm to those who opposed him, and many people embraced Islam at his hands.
