Translation

✧ The Islam of ʿUmayr b. Wahb [Ṣafwān Urges Him to Kill the Messenger] Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr related to me, from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, who said: ʿUmayr b. Wahb al-Jumaḥī sat with Ṣafwān b. Umayyah after the disaster that befell the people of Badr from Quraysh, in al-Ḥijr, shortly after. ʿUmayr b. Wahb was one of the devils of Quraysh, and one of those who used to harm the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions, and they used to encounter hardship from him while he was in Makkah. His son Wahb b. ʿUmayr was among the captives of Badr. Ibn Hishām said: Rifāʿah b. Rāfiʿ, one of the Banū Zurayq, took him captive. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr related to me, from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, who said: He mentioned the companions of the well and their disaster, and Ṣafwān said: "By Allah, there is no good in life after them." ʿUmayr said to him: "You have spoken the truth, by Allah. Indeed, by Allah, were it not for a debt upon me that I have no means to repay, and dependents whom I fear will be lost after me, I would ride to Muḥammad until I kill him. For I have a grievance against them: my son is a captive in their hands." He said: Ṣafwān seized upon this and said: "Your debt is upon me, I will pay it off for you, and your dependents will be with my dependents; I will support them as long as they live. Nothing that I possess will be too much for them, nor will I fall short concerning them." ʿUmayr said to him: "So keep my affair and your affair secret." He said: "I will do so."
