Translation

✧ [Those who were released without ransom] Ibn Isḥāq said: Among the prisoners named to us as those upon whom favor was bestowed without ransom, from the Banū ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Manāf: Abū al-ʿĀṣ b. al-Rabīʿ b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. ʿAbd Shams. The Messenger of God ﷺ bestowed favor upon him after Zaynab, daughter of the Messenger of God ﷺ, had sent his ransom. And from the Banū Makhzūm (b. Yaqaẓah): al-Muṭṭalib b. Ḥanṭab b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿUbaydah b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm. He belonged to some of the Banū al-Ḥārith b. al-Khazraj, and he was left in their hands until they let him go. He then joined his people. Ibn Hishām said: Khālid b. Zayd, Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī, brother of the Banū al-Najjār, took him captive. Ibn Isḥāq said: And Ṣayfī b. Abī Rifāʿah b. ʿĀbid b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm was left in the hands of his companions. When no one came with his ransom, they took a promise from him that he would send them his ransom, then let him go. But he did not fulfill anything for them. Ḥassān b. Thābit said about that: “And Ṣayfī was not one to fulfill a covenant—the track of a fox that wearied at some of the watering places.” Ibn Hishām said: This verse is among verses of his. Ibn Isḥāq said: And Abū ʿAzzah, ʿAmr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUthmān b. Uhayb b. Ḥudhāfah b. Jumaḥ, was needy and had daughters. He spoke to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of God, you know what wealth I have, and I am in need and have a family. Bestow favor upon me.” So the Messenger of God ﷺ bestowed favor upon him, and took a pledge from him that he would not aid anyone against him. Abū ʿAzzah said about that, praising the Messenger of God ﷺ and mentioning his favor among his people: “Who will convey from me to the Messenger Muḥammad that you are true, and the King is praiseworthy. And you are a man who calls to truth and guidance—upon you is a witness from God the Mighty. And you are a man who was lodged among us in a lodging that has easy steps and ascents. For surely the one you fight is fought as a wretch, and the one you make peace with is fortunate. But when Badr and its people are recalled to me, what is in me returns: grief and sitting still.” [The price of ransom] Ibn Hishām said: The ransom of the polytheists that day was four thousand dirhams per man, down to one thousand dirhams, except for one who had nothing—upon whom the Messenger of God ﷺ bestowed favor.
