The conversion of Abū al-ʿĀṣ b. al-Rabīʿ

Translation

✧ The Islam of Abū al-ʿĀṣ b. al-Rabīʿ [the Muslims' seizure of merchandise with him and Zaynab's granting him protection] Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū al-ʿĀṣ remained in Makkah, and Zaynab stayed with the Messenger of God ﷺ in Madinah, when Islam separated them, until just before the conquest. Abū al-ʿĀṣ set out as a merchant to Syria—he was a trustworthy man—with wealth of his own and wealth belonging to men of Quraysh who had entrusted it to him as capital. When he finished his trade and returned homeward, a raiding party of the Messenger of God ﷺ met him and seized what he had, while he escaped them in flight. When the raiding party came with what they had seized of his wealth, Abū al-ʿĀṣ approached under cover of night and entered upon Zaynab, daughter of the Messenger of God ﷺ, sought her protection, and she granted it to him. He had come seeking his wealth. When the Messenger of God ﷺ went out for the morning prayer—as Yazīd b. Rūmān narrated to me—he said the takbīr and the people said the takbīr with him. Zaynab cried out from the women's gallery: "O people, I have granted protection to Abū al-ʿĀṣ b. al-Rabīʿ." He said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ finished the prayer, he turned to the people and said: "O people, did you hear what I heard?" They said: "Yes." He said: "By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muḥammad, I knew nothing of that until I heard what you heard. The lowest of the Muslims may grant protection on behalf of the Muslims." Then the Messenger of God ﷺ went away and entered upon his daughter and said: "My little daughter, honor his lodging, but let him not get to you, for you are not lawful to him."
