The conversion of Abū al-ʿĀṣ b. al-Rabīʿ

Translation

✧ [The Muslims return his property to him; then he becomes Muslim] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr related to me that the Messenger of God ﷺ sent to the raiding party who had seized the property of Abū al-ʿĀṣ and said to them: "This man is of us, as you have known, and you have seized property of his. If you act kindly and return to him what is his, we would love that; but if you refuse, it is God's booty which He has granted you, and you are more entitled to it." They said: "O Messenger of God, rather we will return it to him." So they returned it to him, until a man would come with a bucket, and a man would come with a waterskin and a leather water-bag, and one of them would even come with a wooden pin, until they returned all of his property to him, none of it missing. Then he set out for Makkah and delivered to every owner of property among Quraysh his property, and to anyone who had entrusted goods to him. Then he said: "O assembly of Quraysh, is there any property of any of you remaining with me that he has not received?" They said: "No. May God reward you well, for we have found you faithful and noble." He said: "Then I bear witness that there is no god but God, and that Muḥammad is His servant and Messenger. By God, nothing prevented me from becoming Muslim with him except my fear that you would think that I only wanted to consume your wealth. When God delivered it to you and I was free of it, I became Muslim." Then he departed until he came to the Messenger of God ﷺ. [His wife returns to him] Ibn Isḥāq said: Dāwūd b. al-Ḥuṣayn related to me from ʿIkrimah from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ returned Zaynab to him on the basis of the first marriage; he did not introduce anything new (after six years).
