What befell Zaynab from Quraysh upon her departure and Abū Sufyān's counsel

Translation

✧ [POETRY OF ABŪ KHAYTHAMAH CONCERNING WHAT HAPPENED TO ZAYNAB] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah, or Abū Khaythamah, the brother of the Banū Sālim b. ʿAwf, said concerning what had happened regarding Zaynab—Ibn Hishām said: It is by Abū Khaythamah—: There came to me one whose worth people cannot measure concerning Zaynab among them, of undutifulness and sin. And her expulsion—Muḥammad was not disgraced in it, nor was there between us a battle-field, or perfume of Manshim. Abū Sufyān became, from the alliance of Ḍamḍam and from our war, in spite of nose and remorse. We paired his son ʿAmr and the freedman of his right hand with one of iron rings, firm of clanking mail, well made. I swore that troops from us would not cease, noble men of an army, among a marked host, driving Quraysh away from disbelief until we brand them with a ring above the noses, with a branding iron. We shall make them alight in the districts of Najd and Nakhlah; and if they head to the lowlands with horse and foot, we shall head to the lowlands, the hand of fate, until our path is not bent, and we shall make them follow the tracks of ʿĀd and Jurhum, and a people who did not obey Muḥammad will regret their affair—and what a time for regretting! So convey to Abū Sufyān, if I meet him: if you do not sincerely prostrate and submit, then receive news of disgrace in this life, hastened, and a garment of pitch, everlasting in Hell. Ibn Hishām said: And it is also narrated: “and a garment of fire.”
