What befell Zaynab from Quraysh upon her departure and Abū Sufyān's counsel

Translation

✧ What befell Zaynab from Quraysh at her departure, and Abū Sufyān's counsel. When the daughter of the Messenger of God ﷺ had finished her preparations, her ḥamū Kinānah b. al-Rabīʿ, the brother of her husband, brought her a camel. She mounted it, and he took his bow and quiver. Then he set out with her by day leading her camel, while she was in her howdah. Some men of Quraysh spoke of that, and they went out in pursuit of her until they overtook her at Dhū Ṭuwā. The first to reach her were Habbār b. al-Aswad b. al-Muṭṭalib b. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā and al-Fihrī. Habbār frightened her with a spear while she was in her howdah. The woman was pregnant—as they allege—and when she was frightened, she miscarried what was in her womb. Her ḥamū Kinānah knelt down and scattered his arrows, then said: 'By God, no man shall come near me but I will put an arrow in him.' So the people drew back from him. Abū Sufyān came with a band of Quraysh and said: 'O man, withhold your arrows from us so that we may speak with you.' He withheld them. Abū Sufyān approached until he stood before him and said: 'You have done wrong. You set out with the woman openly before the eyes of the people, and you know our misfortune and our defeat and what has befallen us from Muḥammad. If you go out with his daughter to him openly before the eyes of the people from among us, the people will think that this is because of a humiliation that befell us after our misfortune that occurred, and that it is weakness and feebleness from us. By my life, we have no need to keep her from her father, nor do we have any desire in that, but take the woman back, and when the clamor has subsided and the people say that we have returned her, then slip her away secretly and deliver her to her father.' He said: And he did so. She stayed for some nights, until when the clamor had subsided, he set out with her by night until he handed her over to Zayd b. Ḥārithah and his companion, and they brought her to the Messenger of God ﷺ.
