Translation
✧ [Abū al-ʿĀṣ with the Messenger, and Zaynab's sending for his ransom] The Messenger of God ﷺ could not make anything lawful or unlawful in Makkah, being overborne in his affair. Islam had separated Zaynab bt. the Messenger of God ﷺ when she became Muslim from Abū al-ʿĀṣ b. al-Rabīʿ, except that the Messenger of God ﷺ was not able to separate the two of them. So she remained with him upon her Islam, and he upon his associationism, until the Messenger of God ﷺ emigrated. When Quraysh came to Badr, Abū al-ʿĀṣ b. al-Rabīʿ was among them, and he was taken among the captives on the day of Badr. Thus he was in Madinah with the Messenger of God ﷺ. Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaḥyā b. ʿAbbād b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr narrated to me, from his father ʿAbbād, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: When the people of Makkah sent for the ransom of their captives, Zaynab bt. the Messenger of God ﷺ sent for the ransom of Abū al-ʿĀṣ b. al-Rabīʿ with wealth, and she sent with it a necklace of hers that Khadījah had given her to wear when she was married to Abū al-ʿĀṣ. She said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ saw it, he felt intense tenderness for her and said: "If you see fit to release her captive to her and return her wealth to her, then do so." They said: "Yes, O Messenger of God." So they released him and returned to her what was hers.
