Quraysh's efforts to have the daughters of the Messenger divorced from their husbands
[ سَعْيُ قُرَيْشٍ فِي تَطْلِيقِ بَنَاتِ الرَّسُولِ مِنْ أَزْوَاجِهِنَّ ] وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ زَوَّجَ عُتْبَةَ بْنَ أَبِي لَهَبٍ رُقَيَّةَ، أَوْ أُمَّ كُلْثُومٍ. فَلَمَّا بَادَى قُرَيْشًا بِأَمْرِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى وَبِالْعَدَاوَةِ، قَالُوا: إنَّكُمْ قَدْ قَرَّغْتُمْ مُحَمَّدًا مِنْ هَمِّهِ، فَرُدُّوا عَلَيْهِ بَنَاتِهِ، فَاشْغَلُوهُ بِهِنَّ. فَمَشَوْا إلَى أَبِي الْعَاصِ فَقَالُوا لَهُ: فَارِقْ صَاحِبَتَكَ وَنَحْنُ نُزَوِّجُكَ أَيَّ امْرَأَةٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ شِئْتَ، قَالَ: لَا وَاَللَّهِ، إنِّي لَا أُفَارِقُ صَاحِبَتِي، وَمَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّ لِي بِامْرَأَتِي امْرَأَةً مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ. وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُثْنِي عَلَيْهِ فِي صِهْرِهِ خَيْرًا، فِيمَا بَلَغَنِي. ثُمَّ مَشَوْا إلَى عُتْبَةَ بْنِ أَبِي لَهَبٍ، فَقَالُوا لَهُ: طَلِّقْ بِنْتَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَنَحْنُ نُنْكِحُكَ أَيَّ امْرَأَةٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ شِئْتُ، فَقَالَ: إنْ زَوَّجْتُمُونِي بِنْتَ أَبَانَ بْنِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْعَاصِ، أَوْ بِنْتَ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْعَاصِ فَارَقْتُهَا. فَزَوَّجُوهُ بِنْتَ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْعَاصِ وَفَارَقَهَا، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ دَخَلَ بِهَا، فَأَخْرَجَهَا اللَّهُ مِنْ يَدِهِ كَرَامَةً لَهَا، وَهَوَانًا لَهُ، وَخَلَفَ عَلَيْهَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ بَعْدَهُ
Translation
✧ [Quraysh's effort to have the Messenger's daughters divorced from their husbands] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had married ʿUtbah b. Abī Lahab to Ruqayyah, or Umm Kulthūm. When he opposed Quraysh with the command of Allah Almighty and with enmity, they said: "You have freed Muḥammad from his concern, so return his daughters to him and occupy him with them." They went to Abū al-ʿĀṣ and said to him: "Separate from your wife, and we will marry you to any woman of Quraysh you wish." He said: "No, by Allah, I will not separate from my wife, and I would not love to have in place of my wife any woman of Quraysh." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to speak well of him in his marriage connection, as far as it has reached me. Then they went to ʿUtbah b. Abī Lahab and said to him: "Divorce the daughter of Muḥammad, and we will marry you to any woman of Quraysh you wish." He said: "If you marry me to the daughter of Abān b. Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ, or the daughter of Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ, I will separate from her." So they married him to the daughter of Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ, and he separated from her, though he had not consummated the marriage with her. Allah took her out of his hand as an honor for her and a humiliation for him, and ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān married her after him.
